How would I work with a pspimage (view it) in GIMP 2.8?

That's a Paint shop Pro file and as far as I know Gimp doesn't support PSP files. You would have to convert it to some other kind of image file that Gimp supports.
I think you can get a trial version of Paintshop Pro if you google it.

Even though the format might be listed, the Gimp psp plugin is ancient, probably not going to work on anything post PSP5.

Up to pre-Corel versions (Jasc PSP9) might be possible with XnView, with lots of ifs-n-buts. After that I do not know.

PSP same as Gimp, saved layers and some of those layers might be vector. If the image is flattened to a single layer, it might open in XnView and re-export to some other format.

If it has layers, all you might see is the background.

some PSP files open in GIMP, I know this because I actually do it regularly but there are many others which do not. I believe there is a plug in which allows some psp files to open in GIMP and I think with later versions of GIMP it may well be built in to GIMP. As partha once told me...some do and some dont... but usually for me its some tubes which open by certain tubers.

rich2005, I regularly open psp tubes from a couple of my favourite tubers in GIMP...several times a week...and they are definitely later than psp5...more like psp xi, xiii, and later

Those that I can't open in GIMP go into psp xiii on my virtual machine and are converted to a transparent .png file and then can be used in GIMP just as easily as they can by in PSP only better.
psp masks are usually .jpeg and easy to use in GIMP as well. I do not believe that PSP brushes and gradients can be used in GIMP

you dont want to merge layers, you only need to save the transparent layer with the tube on it as a png. It has to be a transparent layer otherwise its useless

Have you tried using irfanview? Couldn't find the version, maybe 137?

I have the same problem that Wallace has. I was able to open it in Irfanview, but Irfanview only showed the background layer.

It would be most likely PSP x3 or better I think. Its a fairly recent one.
Here is the tubers website where I find some of her tubes but I am willing to bet that a large amount of her tubes will open in GIMP
