Sorry to be so lame, but how do I make the pencil work?

I clicked on its icon in the Toolbox, and when I mouse over to the image I get the circle and the little pencil icon indicating my position, but clicking left and dragging does not draw the foreground color (white) over the black lines I'm trying to draw over (with the pencil tool).

I conjecture I am in some sort of "mode" or "state" wherein the pencil does not work (sigh)...
How to make the pencil work again?

Thanks

OK I figured it out... I needed to go to Layer > Stack > Select Next Layer (twice) and that fixed it.

If someone could please tell me how to mark this issue as resolved (with the green checkmark I suppose) I'ld appreciate it... thanks

Much better to open the layers list (Ctrl-L) and directly click on the layer you want to paint on.

Also, when nothing happens, you could be painting on something else that you don't see (covered layer, channel...) so you may want to do some undo to get back to before your first paint attempts...

Hi Noob1,
I marked your thread solved. When you want to do this, you go to the first post (#1) and click edit, then put solved up on the subject line
