GIMP Version: 2.8.10
Operating System: Windows 8.1 64bit

I just downloaded G'MIC 1.6.0.2 but haven't the slightest clue on installing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you downloaded the zipped file, then create a directory (mine's called gmic) and place it in your user directory. Then add that directory to your plugins folder in GIMP (in edit menu, click on Preference option).

This is everything that came in the zip. Do I have to remove anything before installing (i.e. old version of g'mic)?

First I need to know what version of GIMP you are running (32-bit or 64-bit). :)

Is it possible to overwrite rather than putting into another directory?

Maybe you have the plugin actually installed in the main plugin's directory. This became a no no when some of the DLL interfered with other plugins and it was recommended (well it had always been recommended but I was too bull-headed back in the day) to have GMIC run in it's own directory. Just need to remove GMIC from that directory and follow the steps outlined (used the contents in the 64-bit directory; it should look like the folder view that I showed) and all should work Charlie. After doing so, just launch GIMP and it should work. :)

I tried to find the old g'mic, but the only folder I found was labeled '_gmic' and it only contained one thing named 'curl'. I really don't know what I'm doing when it comes to poking around in my computer (I've killed an $800.00 HP desktop before) so I think I'm going to have to pass on this one. I do thank you for your help though, it is greatly appreciated.

Here's how I installed it:
1. Go to your users folder located in your Plugins folder located on your C drive:
Users>yourname>.gimp-2.8>Plug-ins.
2. Then add the entire g'mic folder to the the plug-ins folder. My folder is just GMIC-GIMP-PLUGIN-64bit-WIN
3. Once you have it added to your drive, then open Gimp to to preferences, scroll to folders, click on folders & locate the Plug-Ins folder.
4. Once there, click on the blank paper icon, then click the new folder icon, and then add the location of the G'MIC folder.
5. Restart Gimp and you should see G'MIC located located in the Filters section.

Hope this helps. :)

I have gmic_gimp.exe in my mains plugin's directory so do I delete this and follow your steps?

If you do so, it will work Deb, and, the dlls won't conflict (the ones with the same same in one plugins folder won't interfere with the same named dlls in another and the plugin will use the dlls from it's own directory). :)

I've really been trying to figure this out (I don't want to just give up). I made the directory in my 'user/*name*/Gimp 2.8' folder, and added it to my plugins folder in gimp like was instructed but still have v1.6.0.0. I apologize for not knowing what to do on this.

@Charlie

Why not use the G'mic installer. It is 32 bit, works with win7 so should be ok for win8 64 bit. Maybe you used this in the past, since you have a _gmic folder, Is there an uninstall entry for gmic? If there is use it.

All good advice in posts about making a new folder & adding it in preferences. IMHO the best place is still your gimp profile.

This video, first minute and a half deals with installing g'mic.

@rich2005 Thank you for that link. G'MIC 1.6.0.2 is installed and running fine. I didn't have to remove or rename anything. It is 32bit, but I think I'll be okay with that. Thank you again, and a big 'thank you' to everyone else too for your help

Hello Charlie,
In my opinion, your problem shows that we urgently need a classical installer for Win64 users :)
Unfortunately, I don't have a 64bits machine running windows, but if there is any volunteer around here, please let me know.
I have a InnoSetup script that I use for Win32 and this can be probably adapted for the Win64 compiled binaries as well, if that can help.

I agree Ronounours, I wish I could do that but the only script I know how to write is cursive lol (just kidding) seriously though, I would gladly lend the use of my computer if I could or if it would help.
