I was typing all kinds of names into the search and it comes up empty. HELP please.

I don't know what all that code is, but there is a free online file converter I've used in the past called Zamzar. You can convert your mp3 to avi there.

I know nothing about Linux, so I can't help you there. With Zamzar there is no need to install anything. Just upload the file you want to convert, select the file conversion type and give them an email address, so they can send you a link to the converted file download.

@molly:
I'm not a Linux guru and I know nothing of this utility but from the display you attached above it looks to me as though the utility has installed properly - it's just expecting you to type in a filename (for the file you want to play) as a command line argument, eg:

$ mpg123 myfile.mp3

You may also have to add the option "-os" to output the sound to your computer's built-in speaker or "-oh" for headphones, eg:

$ mpg123 -os myfile.mp3

And, as it says at the bottom, try:

$ mpg123 --longhelp

for more help and information.
Cheers.

mp3 is an audio file, avi is a video file, why do you need to convert to a video format? Video editors import mp3 as is as a soundtrack. On Linux sometime you might need ogg audio format.

Mine doesn't have all those files. This is as far as it will open, with no slider on the side

Sorry, molly, my mistake - it wants the filename first:

$ mpg123 myfile.mp3 -os

The output you've just attached is the longhelp display with lots more options - funny thing is I can't see any mention of AVI anywhere in there. Are you sure this beast does AVI output?

What I did was go to Google and type in audio converter for Linux Fedora to change mp3 to avi and that is what came up. then I went to root and typed in yum install mpg123

@molly:
Try googling "mp3 to avi Linux" ...it comes up with quite a few promising options.

You might try this one first:
community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1238

Alternatively, if online conversion is okay, just google "mp3 to avi" and you'll find quite a few online utilities.

Odin is right Molly, the 2 file are different... One is an audio file the other is a video file. I was mistaken to think you could convert mp3 to avi, it's just not possible.

@Wallace & Molly
It is possible, as the discussion in this forum shows:
ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1244112

The converter has to fill the video space with something (such as a black frame indefinitely reproduced) but you do get the sound through.

The FF-Multiconverter utility I pointed to above should do it .. unfortunately I don't have a working Linux platform at the moment to try it myself.
