Operating System: Linux
OS Version: Fedora 20
GIMP Experience: Intermediate Level

When I closed and re-opened Gimp, the standard tool options would be restored; i.e., Hard Brush 51; Font Sans, 18; Colors, FG Black, BG White; etc. Now when I open it, the last colors, font, and brush used come up. I tried setting them back to defaults but the settings don't hold or don't change back.

How can I get those standard tool options back?

Try Edit->Preferences->Tool Options and you'll see options to save or restore defaults there.

As trandoductin says

Reset everything back to default, tool options and windows.

That gets the default 3 window mode

Set single window mode. Size the windows and dialogs to suit.
Select the tool, and tool options you want, Select the dialog you want
I recommend locking the tabs so they do not detach.

Then in Edit -> Preferences, Save the tool options and in the windows section, untick save window postions on exit and click on save now.

A video I made for someone who had screwed up their settings, but it just demo's the above.

Thanks both of you. I got it all reset. I am puzzled as to why the default value of the brush is 2. 050 and Dynamics is set to Pressure Opacity.

Pleased you are back to normality.

That is strange but set it up whatever way you want then go and save the tool options and save the window positions.

This is my starting position, PClinuxOS and Gimp 2.8.14

Image

A brush rather than air-brush and the brush shape is not a standard Gimp brush. Set to size 3 and spacing 28
The dynamics is a local dynamics file but is empty. It is there for whatever I want to apply.
Dialogs, the obvious layers and brushes but if you want something else set it up and then save the settings.

Holding down the SHIFT key while clicking on the refresh button :reset in the Tool Options dialog (regardless of Tool) will reset all of your tool options to their defaults.

Thanks saulgoode. It's kind of like resetting them in Prefs, still have to restart Gimp for it to take effect.
