GIMP Version: 2.8.10
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: 7 Home Premium 32 bit
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

Was using my gimp when it froze. That is nothing new if it has been on for awhile. I just turn it off to give it a rest and it is ok in a little while.
This time it froze while I was using some script - black gold text I think it was. But it would not turn off! I had to turn off my pc for the greyed out screen to go.....At the same time I was using pages on the internet and they were working fine.
Should I just turn off in future or is there something else I should do?

I remember GIMP 2.6x having all kinds of freeze issues Sallyanne, but 2.8x has been quite consistent, and, though it will occasionally freeze, it's very rare. More then likely it's a memory conflict that causes GIMP to freeze. Possibly having too many programs opened at once is not a good thing. I have 12Gs of RAM now, so don't even fret it (i.e, can have many programs open without issue). lol

:)

Do you think I should continue to do the same thing again if it happens another time - greying out instead of closing? By the way it was the only program I had running (graphic program that is)

Not sure what your system is Sallyanne, but you are the best one to determine such matters. If you can get away with disabling instead of closing, that would be more ideal since you can use the program quicker, but again, you just have to experiment. My old system had memory issues; now not so much so happy I am. :)

Gimp an be quite demanding on the system resources and as such it it is more likely to reveals failures. Have you run a system memory test recently?

Is that the thing where it shows you what is using how much and when?

Using control alt delete on Windows 7 will open the Task Manager. Where you can force Gimp to stop running, by right clicking Gimp's running processes and choosing End Task.

Thanks Wallace. One thing I don't do much of is use 'keys' as shortcuts etc. Only one I use much at all is F9 in publisher and I was given that hint by an IT guy.

Many computers can run such a test from some "diagnostics" screen in the BIOS. Otherwise all Linux installers or Live CD can run such a test (witout installing Linux of course).
