I have two other scripts, Group Linked Layers and Ungroup Layer, which can be used in combination to assist in doing that.

First set the "chainlink" for the layers you wish to move out of the group and then run "Layer->Stack->Group Linked Layers" (the command is also available by right-clicking on one of the layers in the Layers dialog). Next, drag the newly created group layer out of the layer group. Finally, run "Layer->Stack->Ungroup Layer" (also available from the right-click menu) on the moved group layer if you want those layers not to be grouped together.

Note: if you want to remove all of the layers from the group, just run "Ungroup Layer" on the group layer.

I still have not learned how to use layer groups. Does anyone know of a tutorial that is like a beginning lesson on using layer groups?

Layer group, is, like, putting several layer into a bag, (the 'bag' itself is a 'layer group'), so it is easier to organize. It is better looking, too... :yes
But I don't know any tutorial about it, sorry...

I haven't learnt about layer groups either and this (in the manual) doesn't answer the question....what are they for?

Common misconception. Layer groups aren't about organization or looks but about processing order during compositing. They act exactly like parentheses in formulas (which is why the group itself has a blend mode and an opacity) so you can blend several layers together, and then use this against the rest of the layers (and in that case, you'll find that the mode of the layer at the bottom of a group has no influence whatsoever on the result, like the blend mode of the bottom layer when you don't use groups).

Grouping has no influence on the outcome if you only use the "normal" blend mode.

Cool looking image Ofnuts! :bigthup
I'm not a big layer group user, but I do understand the advantages of using them. That's pretty clear in you image Ofnuts.
