How to Create Text with GIMP

GIMP Version: 2.8.6
Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: New User

Hello. I am a GIMP newbie and I still have problems with the Text Editor. Should I type the text in a word processor and copy into the background or should I try the Text Editor. Do you have any beginner's tutorials for the text editor? Thanks.

If you would like to add text to an image.

Simply select the Text Tool :text

, click on the canvas near where you would like the text to start, then begin to type your text.

Once you have typed in the desired text, you can go back to the Text Tool Options to change the size, text type etc.
You can also copy text from wherever you like and paste it into the on-canvas text box.
I find it best to first establish a text information layer,
then copy whatever text from whatever source you need to copy from,
paste it into the on-canvas text box, by first highlighting the text within the already created text box,
then right-clicking on this text and selecting paste.

A slightly more powerful way of managing text is available as a plug-in. This method is only a little better now days, since all of these features are available using different methods in GIMP itself, but this put's the most common ones in one handy spot. The plugin is called 'Freetype', and is available here for windows (32 bit i think). And is also available from a git repository for those who wish to compile their own for any OS. A tutorial on it is available on this page. I know there are also a couple of threads about it here as well.

This is my first try. I downloaded a Google font and did this. Going to add more graphic and less text next time.
