GIMP is pretty neat and I've been able to do some useful things with it. Haven't used it too much, but I digress.

My issue: How would I go about creating a contoured gradient? The gradient tool does half the job but it seems like what I want might need a script (though I hope not).

So on the enclosed attachment, there's a narrow section I've already applied a gradient to. The kind of gradient I seek would be more or less that, except cut in half along the black line running down the center of the figure. The black line would go to the edge of the figure. Ignoring the small rectangle on the right side that has a gradient.

If it helps, the narrow figure is supposed to be a "shallow water" region (the whole image is a height map).

Sorry if this is worded poorly. I hope its clear enough.

What is clear, is that you're looking for some kind of gradient, or a way to have a gradient do something for you. From you attachment it's hard to tell what exactly it is your looking for.
You also say, that the gradient you're looking for is one that you've already applied to your example image?
Maybe I'm confused?

Maybe using a gradient on a mask is what you need

I'm pretty good with Height Maps using gimp but I don't understand what you're trying to do. Maybe you could draw in some arrows or lines showing where you want to draw the gradient.

Looks to me like you are looking for a 3-d shading effect?
