I was wondering if there was a way to create animated gifs from video without Gimp GAP?
Also does GAP work on version 2.8.10? I ask because I haven't downloaded it yet.

Yes but you need to extract the frames as images. Most video editors can do this. For light video editing like this I use Avidemux.
GAP does work with 2.8.10.

The name of the article is a bit fantastic but there is some good info there. The GIMP, VLC and GAP stuff are half way down.

Odin has offered some good suggestions.

I would also like to add, if the video file isn't very large,
you could convert the video file into a GIF file,
however you see fit.
Then open it in Gimp and edit the clip as you like.

There are also apps that you can use to create animated screenshots of you desktop.
You would need to get one of these apps and use it as you play the video.
To create the GIF image of your desktop.
One such app is called licecap.

Is the extra plugin, the animated cursor really needed for gimp gap? I ask because I can't seem to get it to work since gimp can't load it. I'm about to trash the folder.
A downside to GimpGAP is that I can't go into my removable flashdrive or external hard drive to get video from it.

I am not familiar with an animated cursor plug-in (and I've been using GAP for about 15 years) so I would venture to say it is not needed.

What is preventing you from "going into" your external drives? Could you elaborate upon the problem?

@saulgoode: It's not listed in the "select video input" section when I click on extract video range. All I see are C, D, E, F, & the Q drive. The G drive isn't listed.

@saulgoode: Oh, okay. So I guess I can just dump the folder.
