I've got a ton of gradients and brushes but very few patterns. When I looked in the .gimp-2.8 folder in the Patterns folder there were none. Where can I get a bunch of patterns? Thanks.

You will not find any patterns preinstalled in ~./gimp/2.8/patterns that folder is for your patterns.

The ones you see are the .pat files that come with Gimp, look in /usr/share/gimp/2.0/patterns

They do not have to be in .pat format, you can use png or jpeg images as patterns.

Background (no pun intended) on Gimp resources here: http://libregraphicsworld.org/articles. ... icle_id=30

Pattern images can be referred to as tiles, and and you might see a join between the tiles, intentional or not. Others are referred to as seamless, where a small tile will fill a large area. The standard Gimp patterns are small 'seamless' tiles.

Some more examples of this here: http://www.texturemate.com/category/ima ... es/digital and if you look down the left side there is a section seamless.

The others on that site are described as textures. These do not tile seamlessly but are usually large enough to fill a reasonable size canvas.

Some more locations, mainly textures,
http://mayang.com/textures/
http://textures.forrest.cz/
and some nice patterns for borders. http://www.craftsmanspace.com/free-patt ... terns.html these are vectors (svg) that can be imported into Gimp.

Otherwise trawl through the forum resources section also search through http://www.deviantart.com/

Most of the newer builds of gimp will save your clipboard to a pattern. I know Windows does. Maybe Linux does also?
If you see any that you like just download them and save as then do the rest with your gimp.

So is that sort of a general idea: the folders in my Home folder I can add stuff to? The folders in my File System I should leave alone?

So I could put pngs and jpegs into my gimp.2.8 folder (In the Home folder, that is.)?

Thanks for all the links! (That'll keep me busy for a while!) But how am I going to get patterns from Deviant Art? (People are so keen on that site. I've got an account there but can hardly navigate the site.)

Thanks Wallace for already answering it.

Thanks very much Wallace and Sallyanne. Let me just clarify a little more. So if I'm out looking around, say at textures, and if I think something would make a good pattern on GIMP I can copy the texture (like a portion of it, if so, what size?) to my Clipboard and then add that texture (and name it) as one of my patterns?

If you open any image and use the copy/cut commands.
This will send the copied or cut image or selected region to the Patterns Clipboard as well as the Brushes Clipboard.
Then you can use this copied or cut portion or entire image as a Pattern or Brush form the Clipboard.
This can also be done on the fly for testing out your patterns and or brush, without having to save anything.

Note: If you do not save the copied or selected region as a brush or pattern.
The next time you use the copy/cut command, it will disappear form the clipboard.

Thanks Wallace. Great explanation. And I did it. One last question. Is there an ideal size to save as a pattern? I know I can select whatever area I want and I think you had 208X208 so would that be the ideal size?

You're welcome Iggy. :bigthup
I haven't found there to be any real ideal size.
I have many patterns some very large and some that are really tiny.
It all depends on how it's going to be used and the size of the image it's being used on.
As long as the pattern looks right for the image at hand, then it should be alright.
Also, making small patterns larger will cause distortion of the pixels.
It's better to make larger images smaller then it is to make small images larger.
Always try to scale down instead of up, in any situation.
Same goes for patterns and brushes ;) .
