Hi Folks,
as a new user of Gimp Chat I'm not sure if I'm in the right section. I have used Photoshop for many years and have decided to give Gimp a try. In Photoshop one of the features I found to be most useful was the Shadows and Highlights in the Adjustments menu. Is there and equivalent in Gimp? I have looked at some of the online tutorials regarding shadow/highlight adjustment but they seem fairly complex, using layers, and desaturation etc which is fine if you only have a couple of photos to work on. But if I'm working on lots (100) of photos it would take far too long. Does anyone have a suggestion how to do this, even if I had to use a plugin? Many thanks.

You may be looking to perform some kind of batch process if you're working with lots of images.
I'm not very familiar with this process. However, there may be others here that know more about this then I. They may also be able to suggest other methods that you might employ to help in processing multiple images.

Thanks Wallace for your reply. I'm not really looking to batch process, just a quick way of adjusting shadows and highlight.

Hi Rich, thanks for your message. I've installed the G'mic filters, they very good. I shall have great fun playing around with them. I tried the filter that you have suggested but, while good, I find it doesn't open up the shadows far enough. Thanks, Ray

How about I show you an example of a photo I want to work on. You can see the dark area that I want to brighten. Kind of like a fill in flash effect.

you may play with the old but still effective filter (Colors)/Retinex.
This is one quick result.
Play with layers and modes.
This was a layer on top 25.0 Screen mode (level low)

Still needs cleaning and CA reduction (but too lazy to try). Used shadow screen, contrast masking and more than enough kitchen sink attacks to outline. lolol

:)

Similar result to lylejk. I instinctively reach for Luminosity Masks (saulgoode) - I don't know what I would do without them!

Very quick and easy the attached is about 30 seconds work.

A simple, but effective solution, can be to use, Color>Curves.
You would need to develop a few saved preset curve settings, to be used later, to make adjustments to shadows and light on a given image/photo.
You would have to work out what curve settings you feel work best on a given image or photo.
Save these curve setting and use them later on other photos.

On the basis of OP's first post, a couple of sliders (as in PS filter) and lots of images to process.

Maybe this script. http://registry.gimp.org/node/32369

If all the images are similar to posted then I would just max out the sliders since there is no preview.

The masks created are 100% black / white so unlikely to get much better with curves/contrast/levels.
There is some adjustment if the layer opacity is tweaked.

edit: Got a slightly better result (lighter) after applying filter
New-from-visible and as Wallace pointed out an adjustment with the color curve. However that is getting away from a one-click fix.
