I have a base image and a transparent layer on top of it. I've drawn paths over the base image, and stroked them, intending them all to be on the transparent layer. Some of the paths by accident are on the base image - how can I simply move them to the transparent layer?

Are you needing to have all the paths that you've made on the same layer. Or do you wish to us the paths "as is" on the same layer.
I also may not fully understanding what it is you're trying to accomplish.

Note:
When you create a path, it can be used on any active layer that's available. You can also create paths that are not all together, but this still applies.

Robert when you stroke a path the active layer is where the stroke is added

Wallace, I need all the stroked paths to be on the transparent layer.
Graechan, yes clearly I had the base layer active while stroking some of the paths.

The paths are not associated to any layer. Like the selection, they are associated with the whole image and will apply to any layer

OK, so how can I remove the strokes from the base layer? That would solve my problem, as I could then simply apply the strokes to the correct layer.

Robert, your paths are in paths tablet, not in your background layer. So your paths (one to one) or (all of them) you created can be active and you can apply a stroke to the layer you like (in layers). :)

I know, thanks. How can I remove the strokes without deleting then re-importing the base layer?

I solved the problem by deleting then re-importing the the base layer, but I would still like to know how to remove strokes, if anyone knows.

Basically you can't... on the path has been stroked, it's exactly as if you painted it by hand. Of course, you can always undo (Ctrl-Z) as long as you didn't save/reload the image. This is why it's always bet to stroke the path on its own transparent. layer

Create a new transparent layer, above all your other layers and stroke the paths on this newly created layer. Delete the layer that was previously used to stoke the paths on.

Yes...
It can be confusing dealing with paths.
I'm also not sure exactly what's trying to be accomplished, but it seems as though the strokes are not on the desired layer.
