Wouldn't Channel context, Add to Selection and Edit | Save to Channel do the trick?

No i tried and the scales in the "Scales" channel were not selected. Just the text outline. By blending i was able to make a perfect copy of the scales, blurred 3d and original channel layers. :bigthup
I have no idea why the scales were not added as a selection.
