I'm trying to apply the Nik Collection filters (after installed them) to GIMP (2.8.16) using this instruction: bernhardhuber instruction (can't post url, but at google is the first link of "nik collection gimp")
Done all steps, the Python-FU is available with 'console', but there is no ShellOut section, no matter what I've tried to do.
Of course edited the ShellOut.py file to the right paths (and without the #s), put the file on plugins dirs, tried to copy it to the other paths dirs (of the filters)..nothing shows.

What am I doing wrong?

You have to manually add the entries in the Shellout python script. Below are the details for 64-bit GIMP.

Yeah; for every program you want to launch using shellout, you have to edit the file as pass the right format that the program excepts. Unfortunately, for 4 of the NIK presets, they can only accept jpegs but they can export TIF. If you really need a lossless result, you will have to saveas within the NIK preset itself before exiting and then port the result back into GIMP via drag and drop. Usually, the jpeg result will do fine though.

I've tried to copy the ShellOut.py file to each filter directory, with all paths, only path of the filter on the directory...nothing, I must doing it wrong, there is no ShellOut section in Filters no matter what I do.
Its frustrating.

Lets start from beginning, what should be in the shellout.py file? (what commands), where should I put the edited shellout.py file?

First, you should only have one ShellOut.py file and it needs to be located in your GIMP's plugins folder. That python script then needs to be edited per my link. Now, if you have a 32-bit OS, then that might be a problem since the path will be different (and I don't want to assume what that path is). Your plugins, once installed, should be located per the path entries I mentioned (except for 32-bit OS of course). Shellout will be located at the very bottom of your list in your GIMP filters drop down. Follow thread below for additional info about Shellout.

I done everything, file edited to the correct folders location (with 64bit, I have 64bit system), put it on the plug-ins directory, all I have at the bottom of my filters are Python-FU and Script-FU. No ShellOut ...don't understand whats wrong with it, done these steps more then 5 times...

I wonder if you are pointing to the proper place for where your GIMP plugins are stored. Go to edit>preferences, then, scroll down and click on plugins and see if you linked the folder where your GIMP plugins are stored.

Yes followed by the plug-ins preferences to find it first.
Should I do another thing after edit the file 'for my needs' (with the right path of my filters dirs), place the edited file in the GIMP plugins directory, open GIMP, open a photo, ... ? still can't see the damn shellout :\

If shellout is in the directory where you pointed to for your GIMP plugins (python scripts are seen as plugs and not scripts so don't put it in your Script-fu folder), then it should show up unless, somehow, you actually don't have python installed but you said you see the python-fu option in you filters dialogue so that should mean you have python installed. Anyway, I'm really just a better than average GIMP user and not a guru when it comes to configuration issues. Maybe someone here might know the answer to your issue. Anyone?

For the test - check that the attached file is displayed in the menu?

Easy to make a mistake in editing - sometimes missing or in the wrong place, space or comma is causing the problem.
My sytem is 32 bit so the path for 64 bit by Lylejk.

Someone at another forum noted that you can drag and drop for the 4 stand-alones any file type (tif, jpeg, or png). That led me to try tif again. I still occasionally get errors box pop-up with tif but the layer gets transferred back to GIMP. I guess I assumed you coundn't pass tif due to the error box. You still cannot pass png though. Now at least you can work with alpha channels too. Will duplicate this prose at the other NIC thread as well.

Just updated the list; replaced jpgs with tif and added the pre-sharpener preset.

Now this file is works! finally show the ShellOut section, maybe had a corrupted file. Awesome thank you!



I've update the file with the new file types, tried any filter its getting error message kind of "unsupported image format" (with the tifs) and others (pngs) get "the file xxxxx could not be opened because it does not exist or access to it was denied"
neither works with jpgs.

Now what?

I think it is a mistake in the path of Shellout.

Show code shelout [programlist] and location (full path) to Nik Collecttion (executable file).

Also check the path to the temporary directory folder [Edit-> Preferences-> Folders] and see if you click OK in Shelout created a new file (gimp-temp-XXXX.tiff)

The location seems ok, its open the program but getting these error messages in the filter programs (each of them)
I've checked the temp directory and its create new files.

GIMP 2.8x did have a problem with tifs in older versions. They've since fixed that. What version of GIMP are you running Psy. I'm using 2.8.16.

Yes 2.8.16, but also in jpg I get same errors..
I also tried to reinstall GIMP..

Now the paths that I shared are for 64-bit OS. Not sure if you have a 32-bit or 64-bit OS. Could also been copied wrong. Can you share a screenshot of your shellout file?

My OS is 64bit, the paths are correct (I install the Nik Collection on D:\)
Again, seems the 'calling' of the filter programs are works very well (programs opens)
