Have look at Logo Toolbox V2.x Tutorial (updated)
The Logo Toolbox dialog is long (depending on your resolution), you may also need, Script-Fu Scrolling Interface Modification.

RJKD, also you can do these steps:
1-write the text and apply a texture on it.
2- filters - render - 3D Extrusion - Grow AlongX-Axix. OK
3- on extrusion layer - go Hue - Saturation - Lightness about 15
4 - Merge layers

I hope it can help :)

You'll need at least 2 things to make this text effect.

1)The pattern neurons. Which you can find using the link below.

viewtopic.php?f=9&t=9273&p=123793&hilit=neurons#p123793

2)The 3d-extrusion script.
This you can get using the link provided below as well.

http://gimpscripts.com/2013/12/3d-extrusion/

I don't know what font was used,
but I sure you can find something similar.

You would need to put out some text and fill it with the neurons pattern.
Then run the 3d-extrusion script,
using the settings below.

Image

Lighten and darken the respective text layers.
Top text layer darker and bottom layer lighter.
Apply a drop-shadow to bottom text layer and your done.
I made this image below as an example.
The font I use is Serif Bold.

I found a similar font to the one use in the orginal text effect.
It's called Whitin.

You can get this font using the link below.

I like the Whitin font, it seems to be well made. Too bad it's missing some important special chars.

I did manage to find this font and I think it's a near perfect match.

I was so pleased yesterday installed scripts as recommended and got a great result, came at it again today - 3d extrusion not working, text selected? What could I be doing incorrectly? Bear with me please.

Are you sure the text was selected; common problem with selections, especially with the 'wand', is what is inside and what is outside the selection. maybe your selection just needs inverting?

I'm not sure what the issue might be. We would need more information.
Also, there's really no need to make any type of selection to create this effect using the 3D Extrusion script.

These are the steps to recreate this effect.

1) Put out text.

2) Fill text with pattern, however you like.
I like to create a path form the text and then create a selection using the path.
And fill this selection with the pattern, on it's own layer.

3) Run the 3D Extrusion script on pattern filled text layer. (No selection required)

4) Add drop shadow to extrusion layer if desired.

5) Add background, on it's own layer if desired.

I found if you use the script after text it doesn't matter re putting a pattern in it. The script gives the option of extruding with pattern and it also caps it with same.
