Looking for solution to difficult situation, wherein hair is intermixed in complex background (trees in this case), and where there's not much contrast to work with. I've looked several tutorials/videos that address the 'hair' challenge, but so far I haven't found one that works in my situation. I know how to create layer masks using Desaturation, manipulating of Levels and Curves, followed by using Threshold function to obtain a starting point for such. However my various attempts have so far failed to produce a mask with proper edges that I can cleanly manipulate. I've tried using other multi-step techniques borrowed, some from Photoshop that use a Linear Burn as last step, but those don't seem to work well in Gimp I suppose. So I'm kind of at wits' end, and conclude that either there isn't a good solution for my situation, or more likely I don't really know what I'm doing, or there is a workable solution that entails a series complex processing steps that I'm unable to come up with.

I have the G'MIC plugin, and have played with some options, but I think I'm mostly just stumbling around. I'm attaching a partial of the hair-tree section of the image that is vexing me. The other half of hair intersection has a simple background, which doesn't pose a problem.

Here's a nice tutorial you may find helpful.
Also, you could duplicate the image and invert the color.
to see if that helps you to create the mask you're looking for.

Thanks Wallace. I have seen that one, but I'll review it again.
I'll try just a simple inversion, don't think I've tried creating mask from that point.

Thank you! :)

It's worth a shot.
Your image does pose some difficulty,
given the colors involved.
You may not be able to create the perfect mask because of this.
You also might find it necessary to paint in a few hair strands here and there.
