I have got a few small pictures off the net (ones that can be used with modification)
I cant select and delete because nothing is happening.
Anyhow a few of them are jpg's and therefore have white backgrounds or other and I want to make them transparent.
A few of them won't. I am checking that the image mode is RGB but it isn't making any difference. :gaah
What am I missing??

Also my fuzzy tool selector isn't always selecting just the one colour in the nearby areas but the whole image. I've tried flattening the image but it still wont do it. Do I need to reset it and if so how do I?

jpg's don't really do transparency, as far as I can tell.... you might try exporting as a .png after your edits are done and see if that helps.

:D

Can you upload any of the images?

Also, as Meemaw has suggested,
save the image as png or even as an xcf and try then.

Layer>Transparency>Add alpha channel, on a hunch.

Thank you all for your replies. - I have edited them all now. I think it was the last suggestion that worked.
I know you cannot save a picture as a jpg and have it keep it's transparency - I usually save as png's. Never thought you probably couldn't edit a jpg before saving it as a png - sure I have done it before.

Definitely *not* needed... The only difference between a PNG and a JPG once loaded in Gimp is that the latter has no alpha channel by default so you cannot have transparency until you add one.
