in photoshop you press Ctrl Alt 2
to get the highlights (lighter tones)of the image selected, is there a keyboard shortcut or command to do that in Gimp?

You could do this.

1. [Layer] [New From Visible]
2. [colors] [Desaturate] [Lightness]
3. Use the [Select by Color Tool] and change your [Threshold] and click the light area that you want. This will give you a selection of the light areas no matter what colors are in the image.

You can make the desaturated layer invisible by clicking on the little eye in the layers dockable dialog. And still select with the Select by color tool while viewing the color image.

And with a selection you can hit [Shift + Q] to toggle in and out of quick mask mode to better see and or edit the selection.

No immediate way as with PS

What you need is Saule Goodes luminosity script see:

viewtopic.php?f=23&t=8983&start=0#p116423

That creates a series of Light - Mid - Dark channels which you can use to create a selection.

Thanks for the replies, I knew abt Saule Goodes luminosity script (I have it) but just thought there might be a quicker way, like pressing a key and at the same time clicking on a channel etc.
thanks anyways.

If a selection of the lighter tones from lightest to darkest is required then you could simply select all, copy, go to quick mask mode and paste, and then exit quick mask mode.

You can turn off the dancing ants selection border by hitting (Ctrl + T) to edit the highlights.
