Ive spent hours trying to do this but the best I can do seems to be just enhance the contrast (quite a bit). But looking at the task here, I've got to think this is textbook and I just dont know what Im doing.

The goal here is to be able to scan a PCB on a flatbed scanner (or maybe a good smartphone snapshot).

Then spit out separate layers as follows:

-everything light green = "traces" -everything dark green = "empty" -everything white = "silk screen" -everything gray = "pads"

The layers do not need to be vectors! This is just a raster-to-raster conversion here, I just need them logically separated so I can export each layer as its own raster file (and then do the vector conversion using another process I have figured out that works)

Looking at the image I think those are all pretty well separated already by color. There is some white in the gray solder pads, and the difference between "light" and "dark" green is not that fantastic, but its there.

Please help!! This has been a big problem for PCB hackers and nobody has figured it out. BTW just so you know, this PCB is my own design, so no copyright issues.

a small version of the image is below, i have the full image available too but I cant post a link to it

Are you trying to have all the colors separated on to their own layers?

I think you need to reshoot the image in an environment where there are no shadows....i tried separating by colors the shadows make it really hard.

I agree and also a higher resolution image would be preferable.

Yes.
Besides all the shadows.
There are gray and white anomalies within the image,
which seem to not belong.

thanks for the help guys. that image is not the high resolution version, i cant post the high resolution version on here yet.

that image was scanned on a flatbed so there really isnt any way to do better.

its not going to seperate itself in one shot, all the anomalies, shadows, etc.. a strategy is needed here. i tried first modifying the levels and modifying green sat/hue to enhance the differences but it wasnt really quite good enough. im thinking a different method needs to be used..

You need to make 5 posts in order to be able to post your image.

Have you tried a color inversion, to see if that helps any?

flatbed scanners give shadows where there's depth difference.
i think you can get better results if you use a lightbox where light is even from all directions.

from your screen shot this is the best i could in separating colors.

There seems to be a lot of artifacts around where the white and gray areas are...i am guessing because of the depth difference so light/shadow disperses.
