I'm sure this has been answered before, but can't find a thread.
I am designing a book cover and need to merge two photos. I have bought a stock photo of a woman who fits the cover concept but she needs to be wearing short-pants, (has to do with the title of the book!)
I have found lots of pix of women wearing short-pants, same angle, same background, etc. So that isn't a problem. But is there a simple tutorial the describes the process of merging the two photos.
I'm new to GIMP and not a geek... need it simple.
Thanks in advance...
Bry

Hi Bry,
Welcome to Gimp Chat. :)
I think that if you post your photos, people here will be able to say what is the best way to do it.

In addition to Issabella's suggestion.
A layer mask might be the way for you to go.

Layer masking can be a very powerful tool,
to use for merging photos into each another to form a single image.

Basically you'll be placing one image on top of another and removing parts of the top layer,
using a layer mask.
To reveal or show what's on the layer below.
Making it seem as though the two images are one,
or merged together as a single image.

If you're not familiar with how to use a layer mask.
Below are two links,
which may help you to understand how layer masks works.

Thank you both for taking the time to respond to my post. Much appreciated!

Here is the pix of my Cover-Lady, (the client is sold on this girl). And also a pair of shorts.

I haven't bought the “shorts” photo yet, until I determine compatibility. But there are tons of similar pix and I don't anticipate a problem finding one that works. I tried to match angles and background.

My Cover-Lady is cropped off at the bottom and I wonder if that is a problem. I'm not concerned about showing a lot of leg here, but it has to be obvious that the girl is wearing short pants. Also the join between shorts below and the girl's top above is not that critical. I'll be inserting type across that part of the composite.

Give me a shout back with your opinions. I think this will be a fun project for me and I'm looking forward to learning...

Bry

I did this pretty quickly using a layer mask.

Wow! That looks perfect. So by reading the links that you so kindly supplied, I can do the same thing? No hidden tricks? I really want to learn this process myself.

Thank you so much!

Yes,
no tricks.
It took me only a few minutes to do.
If you check out the xcf file I attached,
you'll see what I did.

Good morning Wallace,

Just going thru all the information provided. If I'm reading your attachment right, you start by placing the girl on a layer and then mask out, from the waist down. Then the "shorts" are introduced over top in a second layer.

Does this get me started on the right foot?

Thanx...
Bry

You want the layer with the mask,
as the top most layer.
Add the layer mask to the top layer or girl.
Place the shorts below the girl or top layer.

Using the default layer mask setting of,
White (full opacity).
As you paint using black on to the layer mask.
It will reveal the shorts layer below it.

This is nondestructive editing.

As you paint with the foreground color/black.
The pixels will disappear.
If you paint on the layer mask with the white or background color.
The pixels will reappear.

With a little patience.
You can really refine what is and isn't masked.

Thanks. I'll struggle on here. Slow just finding the right buttons to push. Hope you don't mind, but I'll probably have a few more questions before I'm through.

Many thanks,
Bry

Okay. I'm not getting to first base here.

Under “File” I press “Open as a Layer” and import my photo of “the girl” to the Gimp Workspace. She appears, (as a layer?). Then I go back to “Open as a Layer” and import my photo of a pair of shorts. A tiny pix of “shorts” appears on top of “the girl” ...much too small. I click on the “shorts” and use the “Zoom” tool to increase the size but both the “shorts” and “the girl” increase in size.

My thought was to re-size the “shorts” and make it the bottom layer, somehow. Then mask out the lower half of “the girl” and the “shorts” would magically fill the space. But I guess I'm out to lunch, on this.

I enjoyed the video you provided, the foot with the golf ball, but the presenter moves way too fast for a beginner. I even downloaded it and played it at a slower speed. She starts out with the two photos already in the workspace and no instruction as to how she got them there. And she must be using an older version of GIMP. Her workspace looks much different to mine. But it was interesting to see what is possible.

Could you possibly give me a simple step-by-step instruction on getting started. How to set up the photos in the correct order? It seems you have 4 layers open... is that correct? And which tools are you using and are they in the “tool box” or in the drop-down menus?

Ok... I know I'm a pain... but I do thank you... profusely!

Have a great day,
Bry

Perhaps I can make it a little simpler for someone not familiar with the process (like me!)
I would open both images separately.
You then need to enlarge the canvas on each. (Image/Canvas Size).
For the "shorts" picture you need to make enough room at the top for a new "body" and to the right, because the models arm projects to the right of the body line.
The model picture needs room for a new pair of legs!
As you enlarge the canvas size you can drag the image in the preview to where you require in the canvas. Be generous, you can always crop the space that is not required later.
Now, using the measure tool (it looks like a pair of compasses) measure on each image where the join will be. The measurement appears at the bottom of the screen.
Write these down (yes, pencil and paper!)
Using a calculator(!) find by what percentage you need to reduce the larger image to match the smaller and scale your larger image by this percentage
You now have two images of the same scale.
Copy your shorts image (Control - C).
Open your model image and create a new layer.
Paste "shorts" into your new layer (Control - V) and use the "anchor" to fix it in place.
Reduce the opacity so that you can see "through" your shorts image to your model image and use the move tool (crossed arrows) to align the two images.
At this point you should find it easy to follow the instruction from Wallace about using a layer mask.

Sorry if this is long-winded - I hope it helps you in the right direction.

david.

In addition to the information which david has provided in his posting.
I've made a video tutorial explaining what I did to create the image below.

This is great. Thanks so much. Here's my first effort. The cropping needs to be refined and I didn't play with the Shadow but I feel I have a handle on the procedure. Now I just need to work with it. Again, thank you everyone. You put a lot of time into this and it is much appreciated.

No problem bcripps.

Looking good! :bigthup

Glad we were able to help out.
Learning how to use layer masks,
can be a very powerful and advantageous way of editing photos.
As you work with masks.
You'll find that there are many uses for them.

Good luck with you latest project,
let us all know now it turns out.
;)
