I noticed when I returned to an .xcf after saving it I couldn't undo what I had done. Is that the case? I mean, the layers are still there and everything. Is that 'edit>undo' the only functionality you lose when you save an .xcf and return? Thanks.

Unfortunately yes,
you will lose the undo functionality.

Yes, undo is for the current session only, otherwise the XCF could grow very large with the successive edit sessions.

I have noticed also that when you use a plugin that has an outcome in a new "window", you cannot undo
editing in the new outcome without first saving it as an .xcf file

Thanks animicule. I haven't run into that one yet but I'll be prepared for it if I do.

This is not true, or true for a very specific plugin that must be doing very strange things....

Edit: Actually, likely a bug in the plugin... For performance reasons, the author has likely disabled the undo while it modifies the created image, and forgot to enable it before exiting. But just saving wouldn't be enough enable the undo stack, you should save/close/reload for this (although duplicating the created image and closing the other one would likely also work and be faster).
