I need to be able to do some curved text...is there a tutorial somewhere for this?

yes. If you put curved text into the search box, several different choices appear and you can choose which would fit your needs the most.

- You use the "path" tool to define a path that the text will follow (this seems to be the reference for the half-height of the ascenders (l,b,h...) in the text).
- You start the Text tool and enter your text. This defines a text in your regular rectangular text layer...
- But you click the "text along path" button at the bottom of the tool option dialog. This creates a new path representing the text along the path. You can later "stroke" that path (this will draw the text outline) or use path-to-selection and fill the selection.

You can also use the curve bend filter Filters/Distorts/Curve Bend but paths are smoother i think.

I love using curve bend and text along path. You can also run the Text Circle script.
File > Create > Logos > Text Circle
