I get often invitations to publish them on our homepage. They are often very difficult to read. What is the best way to make it more readable, if I try to keep the original colours as much as possible? Is there any plugin for this?

You could try a simple Drop Shadow for the text.

Also,
I feel that when adding text to an image.
It's best to do any scaling of elements within the image,
before adding any text.

In other words.
The text should not be scaled in any way.
Text should be the last element added before it's finalized.

Another good idea would be,
to find fonts designed to be specifically legibility at small sizes.
Such as in my pinion Sans, Helvetica or BellGothic.

Experimenting with a fonts Hinting may also help to improve it's legibility at small sizes.

I use the font Sans with a slight Drop Shadow in the image below.

Wallace, I know this, but I get images made by other people, with text. Maybe it is possible to cut by the colour of the text, make a layer with the background-colour and put the "text" with shadow as a new layer?
However dinnasets versions are nice and simple to do, just now they are suitable for me. Thank you.

I personally would not use this light of a colored text on that color background. But if i were to HAVE to. I would use a drop shadow , black, SOLID , no blur behind the white or lighter text layer as Wallace suggested. That is if you want to keep the original colors.
