Hello all,
For a while now, I've had a little problem with GIMP where everything would go well in the startup process until it got to Fonts.
As soon as it got to "Fonts", it would hang and eventually crash. I have seen other forum posts on other websites saying to just wait for it,
but I've even let it run for over half an hour, and still no luck. I have even tried uninstalling and reinstalling, nothing changed. :gaah
Most recently, I just renamed the Fonts folder (C:\Program Files\GIMP\fonts) to see if that would rebuild the font database or something like that,
and while GIMP runs okay now, the option to use fonts isn't available. :hoh

How can I fix this? That is, the fonts issue. It's always better to have a full-functioning program.

You could have had a bad download of GIMP and just simply needed to uninstall the corrupted version and re-install a fresh copy of GIMP. While renaming folders seems like the thing to resolve problems, that is not how it works within GIMP. GIMP look for the files it has listed in the folders preferences. You would also need to redirect the renamed folder in preferences (which can be anything you rename it).

Before taking on that particular issue, I would suggest uninstalling the current GIMP program, get a fresh copy (preferrably from a different server on the GIMP website) and try again before you rename folders.

In addition to what Mahvin has described/suggested.

There could be an issue with a font or fonts being corrupt.
This could also be an indication of the Gimp User Profile being corrupt,
or missing some needed files.

Sometimes by creating a New Gimp User Profile,
these issues will resolve themselves.
However,
keeping the old profile and reinstalling files form this profile back to the new profile.
Could result in reestablishing the events or crash.

I would recommend removing all fonts form the User Gimp fonts folder.
To see if this has any effect.

You would then need to check each font,
to see if any of them are corrupt or invalid in some way.
Fonts that have a size of "0",
are usually corrupt and can be removed and reinstalled later,
after finding a valid replacement for any corrupt font file found.

Also,
if creating a new profile,
this issue resolves itself.
You would still need to reinstall each font, one by one.
Until this event reoccurs.

To create a new Gimp User Profile.
Rename the current profile,
to something like .gimp-2.8_old.
Then start Gimp to see if this resolves the issue.
