GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: 8.1
GIMP Experience: Experienced User

I have noticed via task manager that when I open Gimp I am already using over 700mb of RAM. This seems very high -- and results in a mouse lag. I have 12GB RAM.

I have deleted doc and undo history.

I have 145 fonts and 250mb of brushes.

Any ideas.....?

Many thanks

You might want to look into installing an Add-On Collection Manager.
To help control what GIMP loads during the program's launch.

This can reduce the resources that GIMP Loads during it's launch,
as well as improve the program's startup time.

...

Below is a screenshot of my Task Manager.
Showing my GIMP's memory usage,
with Ofnuts' Add-On Collection Manager installed.

The memory usage is still quite large.
However it's better than it use to be,
without the Add-On Collection Manager installed.

Thanks. But as you say, your ram usage is still quite high at first load.

Is this made up of brushes and fonts alone...?

It also loads all patterns on startup.
I had 30,000 patterns in the folder and startup took a long long time.
So I started keeping the patterns folder clean with only what I thought I may use.
The fonts don't take much, but some brushes are large.
I haven't worried about Ram useage, just load time for Gimp startup.

As a comparison.
I removed my GIMP User Folder,
which included all the resources that I added over time.
Then I launched GIMP.
These are the results.
Notice the memory usage and compare them to the previous memory usage.

As you can see the memory usage has dropped considerably.
When running with only the default resources.

Any resources added over time will "naturally" increase memory usage.
By managing the resources,
that are loaded during the programs launch.
By installing some sort of Resource Manager,
as I've mentioned previously.
You can greatly reduce the number of resources loading during GIMP's start-up.
Which will also help to reduce GIMP's over-all memory usage,
as well as the time it take for GIMP to launch.

...

Below is a screenshot of my GIMP User Profile folder.

The folders that I've highlighted.
Were created to be used by the Add-On Collection Manager,
as storage for these files.

I would conciser these highlighted folders.
To be the main culprit,
when trying to maintain,
or reduce GIMP's memory/ram footprint.

Many thanks. It might be the brushes I`m using.

Thanks again for your valuable suggestions.
