Hi, so I've finally cut out and moved a layer of a beret onto an image of a politician's head (thanks to all the help I got on Gimpchat).

Now I've rightclicked on the layer and I want to rotate it to my left (politician's right) to fit the head at a jaunty angle (rotate 1 screenshot). I think that will be about 25 degrees so I enter -0.25 and click "Rotate" (rotate 2 screenshot)

Nothing happens to the layer (rotate 3 screenshot)

I've followed all the instructions on the help pages. What am I doing wrong?

I have the same problem using gimp 2.8.22

The rotation doesn't work when I type numbers directly into the box, I have to set the angle by using the slider or the scroll wheel

Try a slightly different method.
Make sure beret layer is selected.
Select the Rotate tool.
Click on the beret layer. A grid appears over the beret layer
Drag one of the corner boxes of the grid with the mouse and drag to rotate.

For the rotate dialogue that you had:
Use 25 for 25 degrees, not 0.25. Maybe it is working, but the rotate amount is too small to notice.
If it doesn't work first time, use the slider, then type in a number again. That usually gets it to work.

You may need to
1. make sure there are no other selections (Check that the place you got the hat from doesn't still have a selection)
2. As Steve said, move it your self until it reaches where you want it.

No it works in degrees, +ve is clockwise -ve is anti-clockwise.

Looking at your screenshots, you still have an active selection. Turn it off Select -> None before using rotate.

It should work but you do need to click the rotate button for the value to take effect.

It will get much better when Gimp 2.10 comes out with improved tools ;)

Thanks. I tried that. This is what happened (rotate 4). I'm baffled

It would appear that the outline of the layer which I cut out hasn't moved when I moved the layer. When I rotate, it rotates the outline of the layer (the tinselly dotted lines) but not the rest of the beret. I'm really confused why that would be. I didn't see anything in the help pages to explain this. I also don't understand what the benefit of the outline and the layer not moving together is. Why does Gimp do this?

On Linux numerical input works perfectly both ways, from menu and by clicking with rotation tool on screen.
On windows I've had this bug too. If I remember right, by dragging first the slider and then using numerical input it should work. Or click the little down/up arrows on right side of the angle box, if you hold mouse button it accelerates.
There are also good other rotation tools, rotation from path by Stephen Geary is what I've been using.

Btw, I suggest changing cubic interpolation to Lanczos3 from preferences.

Not Gimp, just beginner non-understanding. It happens to everyone.

Twice recommended to turn off the selection. Again turn off the selection.

A video demo This start to finish in 2 minutes 16 seconds. https://youtu.be/WNiMzRLvM2Y

edit: Looking at your screenshots you are really not helping yourself setting Gimp up that way. For one thing, you do need to show the layers dialogue.

I do click the rotate button but nothing happens, though I have found if I type the angle directly into the box then click the scroll wheel up and down one notch it will then rotate the selection

When anything doesn't work in Gimp as I expect it to I know from experience that the error is 99.9% mine, and perhaps that is true here, but as I can work around it, it's not a problem, I have put it down to a quirk of Gimp

I don't think Philip Hammond looks very good in a beret :)

On the contrary Timelord - I think he looks quite fetching...
... a Frank Spencer look from 'Some mothers do 'ave 'em'.

Quite appropriate really.
