GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Linux
OS Version: Fedora

The last time I updated my Linux Fedora, I forgot to backup all my Gimp stuff. I still lhave the scripts, plug-ins and a few others but I lost all my personal FONTs I saved over the years.
Does anyone have a way I can get some nice fonts without downloading them one by one.?
Thanks in advance..... dumb Molly

Here's all the fonts I have in my GIMP.
There's about 540 fonts in this zip folder.

I know it's too late now, but this is one reason I put my "Home" on another partition. That way when I install an new version of Linux, all my preferences are preserved.

In case anyone wants a large collection of fonts.

You can download all Google Fonts in a simple ZIP snapshot from https://github.com/google/fonts/archive/master.zip currently 358 MB

You mean you folks don't do backups?

@racer-x: when I install a new version, 1) I do a last round of backups, 2) I usually remove the disk and install the new version on a new disk (my Linux version lifespan is roughly the same as the minimal lifespan of a HDD). Once Linux is installed, I can restore all my stuff from the backups, and/or from the previous disk (put in a USB enclosure). This also lets me shed some dead-weight.

I do backups, you're missing the point. By putting Home on a separate partition, all your settings remain preserved. Example all your gimp plugins, fonts, Gimp settings etc. Not to mention all your browser bookmarks.

Sure you can re-import from external HDD if needed.

I used to do so (especially on WIndows, despite it being much more difficult), but then Murphy says that when the disk gets around 70% full one of the partitions fills up well before the other. The fact that I also have to handle pretty huge files (80GB Virtual machine images) doesn't help. On the other hand, reinstalling Windows was frequent and not really my own decision, while Linux installs are much further apart.

I have gone there in the past, but its pure insanity ! :hehe

They arent sorted.
They are way too many.
My Font Browser almost crashes when it tries to load them all.

Better to use the google.fonts site, which has a system to sort them by style, etc. and only download those you need, when you actually need them.

Reminds me of a pair of posts (in distinct threads....) we had over in GimpForums:

Pots #1: Gimp CRASHES when I start the text tool
Post #2: I just installed 10.000 fonts!

I do hope Molly gets her favourite fonts back, but Fedora is basically RedHat 'testing' and you do have to be careful.

@Konstantin
Totally agree about the number of fonts in the google archive, nearly 900

so that is no surprise. :)

Of course you do not install all of them, possibly easier in linux than Windows but here, the fonts go on an external drive they are not installed.

What you need is a decent 2 pane file manager and a font browser. Find a font (screenshot), copy it to Gimp fonts, refresh fonts. Delete when no longer required.

Looking at my installation. Zero files in Gimp fonts, 2 fonts in local .fonts Many of the system installed fonts disabled.

Favourite fonts? - I do have some in zipped groups and use Ofnuts resource manager when required.

Just a matter of getting yourself organised.

1. Keep a backup of your fonts in another drive, preferably sorted in folders. Why not keep a backup of whole /.gimp-2.x? I back it up regularly cause I don't want to lose the rare plugins either.
2. Use addonCollectionManager.py, then you don't need to load all fonts with Gimp every time.
There are also font managers, but it can be little tricky as you may accidentally load duplicates, depending what you have in Windows font directory.
First thing I do on Windows is a batchtool called 2manyfonts. It removes, and backups all unnecessary fonts from Windows.

Just saw that you have Linux, but it does not matter. Font handling is easier and smoother on Linux than on Windows.

@rich2005
Its sort of tempting though.
They are free for commercial use, professionally made modern looking fonts, which means there are fonts with a choice of several (!) different weights (very important for good design) and decent kerning, instead of badly traced fonts or limited demo versions.

But i agree, organizing is the key.

Oh..believe me, I do. Also copies in external archives plus regular images of my linux system & home partitions, and I know that those backups restore. I have come across instances where backups were made only to find the restore process failed, although that tends to be Windows.

Hope you get sorted Molly.

Feeling the font envy - I have less than 70 in my Gimp folders. I don't know how people keep track of them all. Even with a font manager I can't remember how most of the fonts look most of the time. And I like fonts. Awed out.
