I'm trying to rearrange my Gimp 2.10.
The default installation put the dock of brushes and patterns on top of the right hand side.
I would like the the picture I open and layers there.
I've tried dragging and close tabs but it stays firmly put.
Can it be moved from the bottom to top ?

The tab must be locked.
Check to see if the tabs are locked and unlock them.

Once you've unlocked the tabs.
Left click on the Patterns tab and drag it down to where the layers tab is.
Then drag the layers tab up to where the Patterns tab was.

I was trying to do the same thing . . . and just before I discovered the technique above, I obliterated the bottom right dock. Now I have one long dock on the right. How can I get back 2 docks on the right?

My advice is reset the Gimp windows back to default

Edit -> Preferences -> Window Management then click on Reset Saved Window Positions to Default Values Ok that & restart Gimp.

There has been a few users asking about moving tabs around so this little video

https://youtu.be/01PeLL1F8Kg duration 3 minutes 45 secs

Another question - Using Partha 2.10.4 portable - On one PC the little icons on the bottom of the tabs are only faint dots. I can't seem to find how to change this. It only happens on one laptop.

Found the answer to dots not icons . . .
Run this reg script

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.svg]
"Content Type"="image/svg+xml"

Gimp 2.10.10 .... Windows 10

Thank you both Rich & Wallace...I now have my layers dock at the top & patterns at the bottom!!...

Is it possible to give my layer dock more length & make the pattern dock shorter?....when I put my pointer between the 2 docks, I get the double pointed arrow with the little white line, but nothing seems to move...are they "locked" into position?

Many Thanks,

There does seem to be a minimum depth (same as there is a minimum width). Independent of Gimp Window size, the only way to get more layer dock height without detaching the actual dock. Also independent of icon size. This medium and tiny, smallest height I can get for the patterns.

Gimp 2.10.10 .... Windows 10

I've continued trying different google suggestions, but still no luck....
I have no problem adjusting the width, that is responsive to the hotspots...
But the height is still a problem....I can move the pattern dock up to reduce the layer dock to show 3 layers & can pull it down to show 4 layers, nothing more....the smallest I can get the pattern dock is, with tile view set to large, is showing 8 rows high....I would like to reduce it to show 4 rows high or even 2 rows, as in your 1st example....

When I uncheck single window, I am then able to move the 2 docks as a single entity, but there is no way I can separate them, just like they're glued or locked together....

Thanks for your help Rich,
Hopefully this will probably eventually sort itself out & be reduced to a check mark that shouldn't be there.... :) ...

I can not help much with that. I can always get down to those two rows.

OK, not the way to do it. Wallace shows in his screenshots, not easy to see in that dark theme, so look for those little left pointing arrows which bring up all the settings. One of them is detach tab. That is the one you want.

No point detaching just the patterns, it is replaced by one of the others and the layers dialogue is still the same size.
Detach the layers dock and size it as big as your computer display. However It will obscure other parts of the interface unless you move it outside the Gimp window.

Note: you can do all that easily click-n-drag.
