Hi, Everyone:

I have a quite large image that I made some changes to (added text, etc.). Then I exported it as a PDF, and it came out 250 MB. I need it to be under 40 MB, so I saved a copy of the Gimp file and shrank the image size in Gimp to the actual final export size (it's about 1/4 the size it was). When I exported it to PDF, the file was exactly the same size as before.

Why did making the Gimp image smaller not make the PDF smaller? (I understand it's creating a bitmap in PDF, so it won't be small like a text PDF will be.)

The only thing I can think to do is to export it as a JPG or PNG, then shrink that to the correct size and see if print to PDF makes something smaller.

Anyone have any idea?

You could try importing your PDF into an actual PDF editor.
Making any needed changes to it,
if necessary.
Then export it from within the PDF editor itself,
to see if the file is any smaller.

Often times,
the file compression is better handled,
within a dedicated PDF editors.
Which may help to reduce it's file size.

Or perhaps you can find some form of PDF File Compressor,
to assist in making the file smaller as well.

Well, doh! I went back and looked at the "smaller" Gimp file, and I hadn't reduced it after all. I has set the print size to be much smaller than the document size, and apparently if you set print size in inches, Gimp shows that as the document size and scale in inches.

Once I actually reduced the image size, the PDF came out much smaller.

Thanks.

whaddayaknow!

That's great and sometimes the answer is hidden under our nose the entire time.
Good to know you solved this issue.
This may help others,
who encounter this same issue in the future.
