Stripes when doing a bucket fill with pattern

GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Linux
OS Version: 18.04
GIMP Experience: Intermediate Level

I am trying to do dinassets mosaic tut on a scan of an old photograph.

Whenever I try to do the bucket fill with mosaic pattern, I get this:

Bucket fill works fine on other pictures, it seems to be only on this one that the stripes occur. Where do I have to look?
