Hi folks, I've used Gimp for a long time now but i want to rename an image i already have created, when i opened it i left it as Untitled but now want to give it a name/title, I don't always want save or export every image i create but sometimes want to rename them, is this a so obvious 'how to' i just can't see it ?

You just rename it in your file manager keeping the .XCF extension.
Windows still has a file manager Duh.?
You can also open 'Untitled.XCF' with Gimp and save it as whatever name you like.

I'm trying to rename it while the image is still in gimp not yet saved to windows Duh!
I know i can save it whatever i want & rename it Duh!
I don't want to save every image i create but i might want to edit the title after creating it Duh!

While the image is open in Gimp, Click File> Show in file manager (Ctrl+Alt+F). Now you can rename the image.

No idea why this is needed though.

Hi Gid Joiner,
Don't take that 'Duh' personally I was referring to windows 10 not you.
I use Xubuntu and can't stand that OS that is trying to look like a mobile phone.
They went too far in the 'lets dumb-down the OS to gain a bigger user base' direction.

[rant]
I don't think they even know what 'productivity' is anymore. Here in Australia 'productivity' always means chopping-down more bush to make way for suburbia, malls and car parks.
It's time we all started calling-out these morons IMHO.
:ninja
[end rant]

Hi, Racer that is basically what Tas said, find the file n rename it.
when i create a new image that isn't saved & i prob won't save it, it's just a temp image that'll get deleted when finished, i want to name it just to I.D it as I'm working,
Yep no prob Tas, sorry me being touchy, text can be miss-read, when i ask a question on a help forum n someone includes Duh in the sentence it can be aggravating :gaah :)

... to scream like this, don't you think?

I definitely do not understand what you want to do; I'd just save/export an image and delete if I don't need it after working on it if I run out of disk space.

Sorry cap locks were on,
This post is named - How to rename an untitled image before it's been saved.
When i start a project i sometimes create new images so i can work on those separately, then if i want i can drag/copy/paste into my main image, I don't want to have to create a project folder in windows then export or save every image i create, then have to delete them later just so i can change the title from Untitled, sometimes the temp images i create are very similar to each other so to be able to label each one would be helpful rather than [Untitled]-9-0

Wow! After Tas apologized, still an attitude. Believe me people are here to help, and the last thing we need here is this kind of "Getting into each others throat", especially for everyone to see it. I think if somebody wrote something that bothered you, (so far I haven't experience anything like that here) you should bring it to the Moderator's attention. Or write a PM to that person and asking what's the problem with you.

I understand what Gid is asking (rename the image, as well as there is the possibility to rename each layer), unfortunately I do not know a solution. I agree it could be useful when dealing with many images during the process.
I don't know whether Ofnuts or Rich have a solution.

You can set the filename of the image in the Python console, the image name will be the file part:
image=gimp.image_list()[0]
image.filename='/path/to/foobar.xcf')

will set the name to "foobar.xcf" . This assumes there is only one image loaded in Gimp. If there are several images you can try something like:
# press "Enter" twice after entering the line below
for i,image in enumerate(gimp.image_list()): print i, image.name
# when you have spotter one you want to rename, use its number:
gimp.image_list()[5].filename='/path/to/imagename.xcf'

Of course Gimp will attempt to use the artificial file name that you entered that way when you save.

Fairly trivial to make a script for this.

Also If you want to change the name of a layer right-click and 'Edit layer attributes'.

I can only name it once? I named it Temporary then tried changing it again.
If i duplicate the image i can rename again it tho,

Please read the doc... As a safety measure you can rename the image only if the name is in brackets. So if you want to rename it several times, put the name in brackets. You can also duplicate the image, to get a new [untitled] image.

So, this is what you wanted? It's a far cry from your original 1st post, the one you edited twice to create more confusion. A better post may have been "How to rename the open image tabs?". A bit more descriptive, don't you think?

It was very nice that offnuts did this just for you. I for one am fine with the default untitled1, untitled2,untitled3 and so on....
