I am trying to wrap some text around an image of a cork coming out of a bottle and I have followed several displacement map tutorials step by step but the filter has no effect.

I am using gimp 2.10

As the filter works for me you must be doing something wrong, but we can't guess. So either:

- describe accurately what you are doing
- give the URL of a tutorial you are following to the letter (knowing that most tutorials are pre-2.10, so they could be hard to follow to the letter in 2.10).

That's part of the problem.

I am making a duplicate of the portrait image (a cork being pulled from a wine bottle) I am desaturating and blurring the top duplicate. I create the text layer and move it between the desaturated, blurred layer and the unretouched layer. I select the text layer and click on displacement map. I am choosing cartesian, cubic and clamp options.

The graphic shows that the displacement is going ahead but nothing happens.

I don't quite understand what you are trying to achieve. Which layer is to be displaced, and which layer are you using as the displacement map?

Things to note:
1) Layers must be the same size. Use "Layer > Layer to Image Size" on the text layer if necessary.

2) Select the layer to be displaced. Then "Filters > Map > Displace". Then specify which layer is to be used as the displacement map. In 2.10 this is selected with Aux Input and Aux2 Input.

I have a feeling that displacement map is probably the wrong tool anyway. As usual it all depends on the image (s) and requirements.

For a cork = cylinder there is Filters -> Map -> Map Object Not the easiest to set up, tends to be a bit trial and error.

Although it might come down to more than a bit of hand editing. https://i.imgur.com/enVWQ9c.jpg

One thing that is needed is bumpmap the text, against the texture of the cork, so it shows.

Thanks for the responses.

What I want is of the text to look like it is printed on the cork

I have used a simpler, quicker method here.

1) Give the text layer a slight curve using the Warp Transfrom tool.
https://docs.gimp.org/2.10/en/gimp-tool-warp.html

2) Bump map the text. Use the cork layer as the pattern (Aux Input).
(Use "Layer > Layer to Image Size" before bump mapping.
https://docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/plug-in-bump-map.html

Agree with rich2005. Map Object using cylinder is what you want. Overlay using "Grain Merge" blending mode.

Probably gone a bit OTT with this. Using the warp tool as Blighty's post will be the easiest.

But another way, using a script to deform the text. Saul Goodes warp text - attached, unzip pop in your scripts folder.

Ofnut's "Bend Paths" plugin also works well for this. You can bend objects as well as text.
