Hi all,

I'm trying to apply GIMP skills on the fly - I've got little time to recollect or practice!

I've hopefully uploaded the PDF of the library's Dewey decimal topics listing.

I wanted to be able to simply sap out the background colors in some of the topics.

Ex. Change the maroon, other colors presently in the background to white or another color.

Can you pls help me recollect the steps to do that?

Also can I replace all the background colors presently in the graphic with white simultaneously?

Is it any easier to edit a jpg or PNG in GIMP than a PDF?

I have the file saved as both but I thought users could only upload pdfs to this forum?

I had some notes on this but my flash drive with many of my GIMP notes saved on it is missing so I apologize.

Thank you so much for all your help and understanding.

Eagertolearn, you can upload PNGs to the forum. It would be helpful to know whether the original you are working from is a piece of paper that has been scanned or whether it was already a digital image or PDF document. From the attachment, it won't be easy to separate the background colors from the texts without a lot of text distortion, regardless whether you use GIMP or a PDF editor.

Hi neuro,

My apologies. I took a print out in paper and scanned that in using my 3-in-one HP scanner saved to color as both a jpg and pdf.

Thinking I could only upload a pdf, I uploaded that.

Would it be better to upload the jpg?

I'd have to re-scan to save as a PNG to later upload here.

I don't know if I can access the original creation.

Thank you.

Since you're working with a scan, I doubt the JPG will be any more usable for what you need than the PDF or a PNG since everything is already smooshed to a single layer.

Worse comes to worse and you have to recreate, following is the text, slightly edited from an online OCR program. At least you can cut and paste rather than re-key everything.

Hi neuro,

Thanks so much!

How might I insert different colors or the same color as the background to each topic area?

Is GIMP a good tool for that?

I don't have access to Photoshop.

Thanks again.

If you're going to recreate in GIMP, the procedure would be to draw the frame and background boxes. You can fill the boxes with any color you want. Then add and place the texts on separate layers so you can more easily control the sizes and colors of the texts to best be seen over the background colors. I've not done this myself but once or twice so I can't provide a realistic step-by-step.

Hi Neuro,

Maybe others on this list have done this task?

If you could please share the step-by-step for this that would be so appreciated.

Thank you.

Seen this one before - did not Wallace type it out for you or similar?

Once opened in Gimp, the PDF is a bitmap image just the same as a png. When opening as a PDF remember to set the resolution to 300 ppi

The PDF has some horrible mangled colours ;) not easy to edit as-is with Gimp. However the text can be separated from the background using Inkscape and the whole thing re-built using Gimp.

Change section background - make a selection and fill the layer.

Attached: just the text + logos on a transparent background (text is white so not much seen until downloaded). also the flattened image from the Gimp xcf as an example.

The Gimp xcf + the fonts used in the PDF if you need them are here:

rich2005, thanks for jumping in. I had sort of reached the end of anything I felt comfortable talking about. Back in the 80s I did this sort of thing for a living, but that was on Macs using PageMaker. And only in black and white. I've never missed it for a minute.

I'm willing to go through the process,
of recreating your flyer/handout.
Can you please let us know,
what words you wish to remove and where they're located.
Also if you have a specific font you would like used,
please give the name of this font.
In addition,
please let me know of any background color you wish to use,
behind the lettering (if any).

The fonts used in The PDF according to my PDF reader are:

Easy enough to find or I have put them in the mediafire zip along with the Gimp xcf.gz file. see earlier post.

Might be some use to you.

Thanks rich2005.
I've downloaded your mediafire zip

All yours, ;) Limber your fingers up, get prepared for lots of typing or copy paste from neurolurker ocr post.

Looking at it, the whole thing should be re-done with proper editable text layers. My file is a cludge based on changing the background colours.

The font is ok but line spacing needs adjusting and the character spacing is slightly different for the same word, different lines, as in this example, although never noticed when the original is gone.

Image

If the finished product is needed as a PDF, then Gimp not the best application, A DTP such as Scribus might be better.

It would need to be done from scratch.
I can do the entire handout in Gimp.
However,
if a PDF is required,
then I'll need to pass on recreating it.
We'll see what the OP has to say.
When or if they reply.
