Hi my helpful and learned listmates,
I just want to Delete, Cut or Clear certain words (graphical characters) in a pdf in GIMP. I don’t use GIMP daily so I’m trying to recall the precise steps to use GIMP as a sort of pdf editor (since I only have pdf readers, not editors – no budget).
I click Tools>Selection Tools>Rectangular and use the mouse to draw a box around the “words” I wish to delete. I then select Edit>Cut and nothing happens. Alternatively, I then select Edit>Clear and nothing happens.
I recall it used to display gray checkerboard squares and then I could choose the white rectangular box in the ToolBox (on the left) and it would replace the checkerboard with just white leaving the “words” deleted.
That doesn’t happen now.
What’s the easiest way to use GIMP as a pdf editor when you just want to delete 5-6 “words” leaving white behind in that area formerly occupied by the “words” you’ve just deleted?
Thank you.
Gimp isn't a "true" PDF editor.
If your PDF has multiple layers and you imported all the layers.
Be sure you're working on the layer,
that you wish to edit.
Instead of clearing,
or cutting the selection.
Fill the selection with the appropriate background color.
Which I believe is most likely white.
In my examples below.
I've imported all layers of my PDF.

Note that this PDF has 3 layers/pages.
The bottom most layer is the layer,
that is the active layer after importing into Gimp.
This is not the layer,
that shows on my canvas.
Instead, it is the top most layer,
which is showing.

It might be better to fill the selection with white.
