To make a brush from a jpeg image in black and white, I make Colors / Colors to alpha then I copy the image and I make "stick like a brush"."paste as a brush"
But then when I want to use it with a color of the palette and the brush tool, it paints in black :gaah (except with the dynamics "random color")
If I want to use it in red for example, I have to create a new layer, select the black then fill in red and then copy again and paste as a new brush.
It's so tedious that I gave up the idea of making brushes.

Is there not a script or plugin that can quickly make a brush that can be used with all colors?

Making brushes is easy. Very easy. From your description I cannot tell what you are doing. What is "stick like a brush"?

A brush can be in 2 forms. Grayscale or colour.

When you make a gray scale brush: white is transparent, black is foreground colour, gray is semi-transparent.

When you make a colour brush: what you make is what you get. Transparent is transparent, white is white, red is red, etc.

Each of the above can be .gbr (single layer) or .gih (multi-layer, animated). In other words, Export as .gbr or .gih

bad Google translation for "stick like a brush" :)

So if I want to have this image that is black on a transparent background as a brush, how do I do?
because currently if I have the red in the foreground of the pallet, it paints in black?

Sorry Level_0,
I keep forgetting that English isn't your first language.
Good luck with the translation.

The images I wanted to turn into brushes were black on a white background and I removed the white.... :)

So finally it's easier, I put the mode "grayscale" and "export as" with extension gbr.
But if I want in gih, how to set here:

A gih brush,
or animated brush.
Contains 2 or more layers for it to be an animated brush.

Leave that image as black on a white background.

Do "Image > Mode > Grayscale".
Then Export as .gbr if it is just one layer. The white will be transparent and the black will be foreground colour.
Remember that you can use dynamics to have a variable size, angle, colour. So you probably don't need a multi-layer animated .gih for that image.

The Paint Dynamics Matrix scares me a bit ... but I'll try to edit.

Doesn't every version of gimp have the ability to make brushes from images (Paste as a new brush in the edit menu.)? I doub't you can do this with animated brushes but ordinary flat ones you can.

This is correct Sallyanne.
With the exception of perhaps a few of the most ancient versions.
Which not many, if any at all would be using these days.
If an image has multiple layers,
such as a Gimp animated brush.
You would only be able to do this using a single layer,
within any given image.

sallyanne, I did that but with an image that was not in "grayscale" mode
