Hi. Is it possible with Gimp and/or G'MIC to create a LUT from a single image and then save that LUT in a format such as .cube or similar that can be used in a video editing software like Filmora? I see several LUT/CLUT filters in G'MIC but haven't really been able to see a way to draw out a LUT from an image and then save that LUT in a format that can be used elsewhere. Is there any way to do that? Thanks.

Short answer, I do not think so.

You would be better off asking at https://discuss.pixls.us/ where David Tschumperle resides these days.

A single image is a problem. Gmic_gimp can make a LUT - just a png file - but requires 2 layers. Maybe something like this: https://i.imgur.com/W7VmdCz.jpg

Nothing I can see that will make a .cube file from the LUT (png) in Gimp or gmic.

There are utilities to do this. https://generator.iwltbap.com Just had a look there, I have not used for some time and there is a new version. A PITA to download, does work, I run it in linux using WINE and it does make the .cube ( a big text file ) from the png.

Applied in Gimp & gmic looks like this, https://i.imgur.com/8sLld97.jpg which I think reflects that black background layer.

Use the .cube in video editing? - try and see. The only video editing I do these days is a little chop-and-join.

Again try https://discuss.pixls.us some video interest there.

rich2005, perhaps I've misunderstood something about using a "single image" but one can create a haldCLUT from a single image with the G'MIC "Transfer Colors [patch based]" function. You can also use the active layer from a multi-layer image.

I don't know where "Transfer Colors ..." is found in the regular G'MIC menus as I have it under "faves" but it should show up with just a keyword search.

I purchased a program over a year ago, about $50 if memory serves, which can make a CUBE file output from a single image as well as haldCLUTs. It's called "Image2LUT" by Picture Instruments. I started using GIMP a few weeks later and I2L gathered dust in the interim since I had no interest in CUBE outputs, and G'MIC's "Transfer Colors" is a lot more straightforward.

As I said, I may have misunderstood something vital about the question and answer.

Okay. Thanks, rich2005 and neurolurker. I'll check out the stuff you mentioned. neurolurker, yeah, it's under the 'Colors' dropdown. It does create a CLUT but no real way I can see to save it as a LUT that can be used elsewhere. Thanks.

rich2005, thanks. I think the iwltbap utility might be helpful to me. Thanks.
