GIMP Version: 2.10
Operating System: Mac OS
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

List any relevant plug-ins or scripts:
gmic

I have had luck with the G'Mic plugin, but it makes such a nice color ascii image, yet I can only get it to export terminal-suitable text ("ascii art") in a single color. Is there any way to get it to export a color text image, using the modern terminal standards?

Is this what you are trying to get?
I did this in a few moves
Using the same picture in Gmic, I made three copies/layers
1. Did Black on White on one
2. white on black on another
Moving white up to the top I changed the blend mode to grain merge so it went 'grey' (neither black nor white) Then merged one and 2 together.
Lastly I overlayed the merged layers on the coloured picture and got this.
Exported as a png to my desktop

Unless you were thinking of Gimpressionist - it's in gimp filters under artistic. There are many brushes that can be used and more can be made.

A 3-4 years ago I think Graechan wrote a script ( viewtopic.php?f=9&t=9341&hilit=Ascii+Art&start=60 ) where you could put in any lettering/characters you liked and it would stay the same or similar colours. I do not still have the script. Maybe someone here does or one similar.

Someone here may be able to help you.

@sallyanne - Yes I do actually have a nice color ascii art image in G'Mic - my problem is that I cannot get it to export in anything other than two-tone. I check the "Ascii" box and there is no way that I see to get it to export something I can use in my shell script to echo to terminal other than the two-tone ascii art. It's pretty nice as it is, but the color would be great. I just don't see a way to get it.

Sounds to me like you may need help from a person who uses the same OS.
