Embossed? raised lettering on iron - how?

GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Mac OS
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

Hi folks, wonder if you could help guide me in the ways of Gimp as how to obtain the following.
I'd like to create text on cast iron as per the ''55lbs'' in the image below. (I want to put the company name on the side of an anvil as if it were cast there)

Still haven't found a suitable image to borrow yet and may just have to photograph one in work, but something along the lines of the following or even the above one if I could remove the 55lbs.

So,
step 1: find image.
step 2: open image
step 3: ? over to you

You can use BumpMap for this. For the bumpmap image, use white text on a black background and add some Gaussian blur.

Hello racer-x
Why is it better with a black background? I just made with red (without Gaussian blur) and it looks good?

Needs some tweaking but I can get there

btw: I use the text layer as aux input and it places it top left in the image and then I need to move it into position and turn off visibility on the text layer. is this wrong and what should I do?

Black and white gives more contrast. Not using Gaussian blur gives sharper edges.

Make a text layer from the image window. Text then becomes the 'active layer' that you can move around with the 'move tool'. You can also scale it and use the perspective tool if your anvil is at an angle.

racer-x. Bump Map does the job very well. I don't spend enough time in the 'foundry' :hehe

Not doing anything wrong as such, all a matter of workflow. The text layer is usually a small layer, shown here by the dotted line. The bumpmap default offsets are zero so the bumpmapped text gets parked at the top-left corner (co-ordinates 0,0)

What you can do.
Duplicate the text layer (who knows you might need it later)
Make the duplicate text layer the image size Layer menu -> Layer to Image size
Do any editing on this layer, a small blur will make it rounded, an outline can give a bevel, all sorts of things you can do.
Now apply the bumpmap filter, using the duplicate layer as the bumpmap input. Layer does not need to be visible. Adjust sliders to suit.
