I often find myself having to cleanup images. I have tried the following:

1. I use the Clone or Heal tool on smaller spots.
2. Sometimes I make a selection, paste it, and blend.
3. If it is a plain color, I can select the color with the Color Picker make a selection and either use a Paintbrush or Bucket Fill.

In the inline image, how do I get the right side to look like the left side? The 2 strips on the right are just selections I made and filled with selected colors (#3 above) to show how it isn't working :-) In this example, it looks like the left side is pixelated, but sometimes there is an actual pattern.

Thank you.

I selected the color #c9ccd5 to fill the right side and used noise.
It's 2.10 but you can achieve same with the noise filter in 2.8.

The round brush patterns caused by cloning in the left side are pretty visible btw.
You'll get better result with Resythesizer Heal Selection plug-in, if you need to clean small areas from image.
But in this example, why take that route when you have nothing else but noise over background color?

That looks really good.

I think the round brush patterns on the left are bleed-through from the scan, but I do get those with the Cloning Tool. Any tips on how to prevent obvious cloning marks? I suppose when I click, move the mouse, click, move the mouse, repeat over and over, I get the brush shape, so it would be better to click, hold and move the mouse.

I have Gimp 2.10 installed as an AppImage from https://github.com/aferrero2707/gimp-appimage/releases/, which I read about from https://discuss.pixls.us/t/gimp-2-10-0- ... ble/7097/5. I fallback to 2.8, which is my main Gimp, on my main machine. I'm moving to Manjaro/KDE, hopefully soon.

Regarding Resynthesizer Heal Selection plug-in. Is that the same as Filters > Map > Reynthesize... on 2.10?

I looked for a couple more examples of background patterns that may need to be repeated or repaired. These patterns aren't replicated very well with the Cloning tool. I usually just cut/paste selections.

If I have a snippet, like the two below, how do I make them the background for a larger image (i.e., 640x480)?

Thank you.

If you have installed Resynthesizer, heal selection is under Filters>Enhance.

I'd make those snippets from scratch because they are basic shapes.
But if you crop them correctly you can create a quick seamless pattern.
After that , select all, copy. it will appear in the patterns list and you can drag/drop it on the 640x480 canvas.
