I am making a path and when I check it out later there is a triangle in the upper portion and another shape in the lower portion. I've circled them in red for clarity. I don't know how it got there and I would like to not have it. How did they get there? Is it possible to remove them? Thank You.

If a path is not closed, that is, the end point is the same as the start point, then a selection-from-path will join the start and end to create the selected area.

Without better information you have at least 2 maybe more unclosed paths in your image.

Solution, start again.

It should be possible to reconnect the two paths instead

Thank you good catch on the gaps. I did indeed originally have gaps however I did connect them but still the shapes persist. GIMP operates in strange and mysterious ways (to me). I was hoping that once I closed the gaps the triangle would go away. I tried randomly pressing buttons to no avail after that I try searching 'make triangle thing go away gimp'. I will now try to recreate the problem and see if I can fix from there.
