I am a watercolour artist trying to make a repeat pattern. I have painted a number of floral images and photographed them with my iPhone and opened them in gimp. I want to put them in layers into a tile that is 8inches x 8 inches. I have managed to make each image about 2 x 2 inches to paste into the individual layers. Then I will flatten the image and offset 2 x 2 and then paste another couple of images into the blank spaces to make a proper repeat tile.

My problem is when I open the individual images, although I have made them small, when I copy them and paste them into the main image, they are all huge, even though they should fit as small flowers. So each individual image says its approx 2" x 1.5" but when I paste it as a layer into the 8"x 8" tile the flower is HUGE.

I have no idea what Im doing wrong. Can anybody help?

Gimp (and all bitmap editors) work in pixels, not inches
You need 300 dpi for a good quality print.

For 8x8 inches you need a size of (8x300) x (8x300) pixels
=2400x2400 pixels

For 2x1.5 inches you need 600x450 pixels.

Set all the sizes in pixels and it will all work out the way you want.
