Take an 8x10 image > create a side by side space of same cloned background of original image and then add text to new space. Now we have an 11x14 photo. Not stretching the original image....it stays same size. Just creating empty background area.

Original photo 8x10 and doesn't change > now add historical info describing image (words) on the newly created side but new space is of same cloned empty background > maybe same cloned sky to sky, grass to grass etc Pink color to pink color etc all black etc

Gotta be simple....no idea how to do it....can't get the 11x14 box to even begin. Lots of videos later.... and probably learn best from videos but not finding this.
Thank you.
Euphoric I passed the test to get in here. (Planets and particles) Embarrassed I can't figure this out. lol

Rich is the right person to help you, maybe with one of his clear tutorials.
Hope he comes here soon and sees your post.

Welcome to Gimp Chat, MNguy101 :)
I have a plug-in, which enlarges the size of the picture without stretching it. It works great in few quantities of pixels each time it acts. The author is David. If you are interested in it, I'll post it for you.

Don’t be afraid to start over. It’s a new chance to rebuild what you want.

Not exactly sure what you're trying, but you can add new 11x14 layer without affecting the 8x10 layer (original image) in any way.
Open the 8x10 image you have.
Menu: Layer->New Layer (Ctrl+Shft+N), in the dialog give it 11x14 size.
Menu: Image-> Fit Canvas to Layers. Now you'll see the 11x14, it was out of canvas boundaries.

In the Layers Toolbox, hide the upper layer using the eye icon. Activate Alignment Tool (Q).
Click on the canvas, you will see white small rectangles in the corners of the 8X10 layer.
Select "Relative to image" in the Alignment Tool drop-down, and use the buttons to center it.

Add the other stuff on the new layer. Note that text created with text tool, will automatically be on a new layer.

You can create 22x14 layer and then two 11x14, if you want to work side by side.
I can't grab the idea why you would work side by side, is there a specific reason?
It would be lot easier just to work on top, and use layer groups if you want to keep different versions separated.

I don't really understand the question ;)

I think you need to re-size the canvas first. Using a Gimp 2.8, something like this - https://youtu.be/QbSx32GQhXo duration 3 minutes.
