GIMP Version: 2.10.20
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: Newest update this month
GIMP Experience: New User

I closed it down for the night and went online, and my system was slower than, ever. mouse barely moving etc. I checked to see what was running, no updates as that came in the night before. Looking in task manager i found gnu still active.

so any ideas how this can happen? yeah..

You can right-click on the application and "End task".
Also check that Gimp is not listed under the "Startup tab".
If it is in Startup, right-click the entry and select "Disable".

Your s/shot shows this as a running background process using a gig of memory, which is why your system was slow.
Has this been a one-off?

You can also run Sysinternals autoruns and or Sysinternals process explorer,
to dig deeper into this issue,
but Gimp shouldn't be running in the background.

A one offf? meaning only once? no The last couple days gimp has crashed, when exiting and locked my system well, it may have recovered but i didnt wait to see after 5 minutes i shut down and booted again.

Today i ran gimp again for some time and closed it, just an hour or so ago, and checked to see if it was still running in task manager? And yep it was, just like in this photo.

So im not sure whats up with that, why it would be running? Thats just crazy. This is supposed to be a stable copy.

Should i put this in the .... um.. arg.. where you put gimp bugs?

Reporting as a bug makes only sense if you can explain to the devs how to reproduce your issue.
They cannot repair anything that they cannot see themselves :-(

Yeah, and i dont know how to track it. Its repeatable, thats the only clue. Perhaps i can get more info on what process is still running and they can find what accessess it? its been so long since i debugged any code, lol. years and years, and it was usually cobol or machine, lol.

Pasting a backtrace on your bug report #5359 may help.

Open the Windows command prompt window:

Windows 10 users: in the desktop’s Type Here to Search field: enter cmd and then press <Enter>.

1. A window will open (usually with a black background) - the Windows command prompt window.
2. In the command prompt window, enter "c:\program files\gimp 2\bin\gimp-2.10" --verbose --console-messages
3. After a moment a second command prompt window will open, having the title 'GIMP output. You can minimize this window, but don't close it'. Note that the start might take a bit longer because GIMP now writes output data.
4. When the GIMP application has started, execute the steps to reproduce the error.
5. Select the GIMP output and copy it on the clipboard: on the second command prompt window, click on the GIMP icon in the upper left window corner, then Edit/Select All, then Edit/Copy.
6. Open the appropriate bug in your Web browser and Paste the GIMP output there.
