GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: 10
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

Apparently, typing in text in a jpg in GIMP 2.10.14 has changed from 2.8.2

In prior versions, I would open a .jpg in GIMP and drag the cap A letter from the Toolbox (on the left) and then enlarge that Text Box by dragging one of the 4 comers of that box withing the jpg.

I would then left click the mouse in that box and started typing. I could change the font size and style.

Now, when I start typing in that box no characters appear.

The text I typed appears under the GIMP box and where it displays the down-pointing arrow with a little box with the letters px in it.

The text does not appear in the jpg.

I then tried to import a .doc file (created in Libre Writer) with just the words Splining Tool in it and nothing else. But, nothing happens.

Can you please share the precise step-by-steps to creating text in a .jpg and/or how to inserts a text file into a jpog into GIMP?

I searched the GIMP User Manual and it stated you just click the cap Text and then start typing.

Thanks.

If you do not see text, make sure you do not have the text too big. I often do that and after typing a word out you should be able to make it smaller, right to 0 if you go too fast or bigger if it isn't big enough. In 2.10 you can do much more editing while the text layer is active. Oh and also make sure your text isn't the same colour as your back ground. You will not see it then either until you put a drop shadow on it.

That's not it. The text types in that tiny box on the bottom of GIMP, not just above the attached tool where i have placed the Text box form the Tool Box.

Has the Text tool changed at all since 2.8.2? This was not a problem in 2.8.2 like it is now in 2.10

You need to make sure you move your cursor to the box where the text goes in. I have made that mistake also after I put my number in manually of what size I wanted the text.

If you manually put your number in, your cursor will remain in the box where the number is unless you click inside of your text box after

This is what you will see in the tool options.
Otherwise here is the other

GIMP 2.10 won;t let me put any number nor change the font style.

Pls share the trustworthy link to GIMP 2.8.2 as I could place Text in jpgs with that GIMP version.

This version is just not working.

I'm on deadline.

Thanks.

Hope you got your 2.8 version alright and did what you had to get done -
however I would try the 2.10 again when you have the time. It does work. Some things have changed in it and you will have to work them all out. Names - categories etc.

The only difference between Gimp 2.8 and Gimp 2.10 is the way the on-canvas text tool displays. Changed because most users thought the 2.8 handles were too large.

Gimp has never been able to import a .doc file Sometimes you can select/copy from an open document and paste into the Gimp text tool.

Sallyanne and Wallace advice is best. The Jpeg is quite large, small text / colour of text will play a role. Always use the Text Tool options not the on-canvas tool.
One thing not mentioned is the position of the text layer. It is inserted just above the active layer. Text is hidden by a higher layer. You will see the entered text in the layer name. No name = No text inserted.

I could easily click the Text Tool in the toolbox along the left and place it in any graphic and then start typing in 2.8

In 2.10 the text types into a thin rectangular box along the bottom, not in the graphic itself.

Look at the graphic you enclosed. See where it says px 17. then an arrow then text hidden by layer (etc.) That's whee text is being typed into, not above or near the tool.

That place is just the name of the active layer(*). In a text layer, the layer name is by default the same as the text content, so when you enter text in the layer, this place is also updated as a side effect. Otherwise, Rich is likely right, your text layer could be masked by some other layer, check your layer stack.

(*) To be accurate this is the name of the active drawable (layer, layer mask, or channel), ie, whatever Gimp tools will work on.

I need your explanation in more plainer language not having played with Layers a lot.

Perhaps, screenshots?

Again, I click the A in tool box, situate it in the graphic and it types in that thin little box.

I have no idea how to check if there are other layers.

Thanks.

eagertolearn,

Can't you see your layer dialog ?
If it isn't there click ctrl+L

Then you can check if there's another layer above your text.

My deadline for this project has been suddenly radically accelerated this morning.

GIMP 2.8.2 is not cooperating right now.

Could anyone please possibly do me a huge favor and simply replace the white background of these wire cutters with a black background with the words Wire Cutter in black letters centered on top and share that changed graphics with me?

Thank you.

Hi Issabella,

I downloaded your zipped file to a flash drive. I then clicked on that file downloaded and saw an .xcf file so I clicked on it and W10 asked me if I'd like to open it with GIMP, I clicked OK and I just get error messages in GIMP that it can't open that zipped file. Can you pls re-post as a jpg or png? Thank you.

You only need to extract the file, first, then open the xcf.
