Hello;

I have a .png file that I used PowerPoint to create (attached) - I just want to turn the white areas around the left and right sides of the "logo" transparent - I've set the alpha channel and the area that I want to make transparent shows the checkerboard pattern indicating that the alpha channel is activated... I save the file as a .png with the save background color option unchecked, yet when I view the file in a browser or even looking at the thumbnail in Windows Explorer the areas that should be transparent are white...

Any help would be appreciated.

There is nothing wrong with your png file. All to do with the viewer that you use. Some support transparency, some do not.

"Save background color" has nothing to do with the image being transparent or not, it just saves the background color data.
In this image "transparent" is your original, and "untitled" is saved with red background color. They are both transparent as you can see.
If I open the one with red background color saved and exported to png, and remove alpha channel the background will turn red.

Now fix the edges of the image, because there's some visible white.

@rich2005 - the Chrome browser support transparency and it is showing the white periphery... and in the past I've been able to make images with transparency that display correctly in Chrome - perhaps this is technically a Chrome issue (not Gimp) but I'd like to understand the difference.

The other reason it shows white in here is, transparency will show the colour of the page.
