Brand new Gimp/Forum user here. I'm trying to layer one photo (after processing in GIMP) on top of another photo without having to export photo #1 and then opening it as a layer on top of photo #2. I figure this loses data when I save photo #1, reopen it to layer on top of photo #2 and then exporting the combined photo. Hope that makes sense.

Another way to put it: Is there a way to layer one photo on top of another while they are both open in GIMP?

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried opening the first photo with the OPEN command. Then OPEN as Layers for the second photo. You now have two layers in one image. Turn the "eye" off of the one you are not working with so you see just the photo you want to alter.

Yes. Open both photos, do your processing work on the photo you want and when you are finished
'Edit' - ''copy''
Click on the other photo first to make that one active
'Edit' ''Paste as a layer''

First, you wouldn't lose data if your used a lossless format, for instance Gimp's own XCF, or PNG.

This said, you can just drag a layer from the Layers list of the source to the canvas of the target (or tab, then canvas if you are in single windows mode) to copy it from one image to the other.
