SageThumbs will display the 1st image of the xcf file just fine.
I usually do, "New From Visible" and use this as the top/1st layer,
which will display by SageThumbs.
Otherwise it will show a mishmash of all the layers as the thumbnail.
However...
I use this to show .xcf thumbnail images for GIMP 2.8 .xcf files within windows explorer.
I do believe that the available SageThumbs.
Is not compatible with GIMP 2.10 and wont show thumbnails for .xcf file created using GIMP 2.10.
Unfortunately I have not been able to use it to display thumbnails for GIMP 2.10.
On my computer the .xcf file thumbnails.
Made within GIMP 2.10.
Shown up as black or white by SageThumbs and do not show a thumbnail.

Yep - That's my problem. At least with trying I now have previews of some other files I wasn't seeing. Thank you, Wallace for your help.

I'm surprised no one has made a built-in thumbnail Browser like Paint Shop Pro (see images) has, or the other Graphics programs have.

Is there a Gimp Plugin that will display images we're working on as thumbnails instead of just a files name list?

Also, In preferences - toolbox is the option to show active image - make sure you check it

This will show the image at the bottom of the toolbox

It might be your Windows configuration (I don't have Windows), but on Linux all .xcf are displayed as thumbnails (GIMP 2.10.24 & 25), also the .xcf on external drive/dongle.

Or may be it's because you have installed this "SageThumbs" (for what/why? as your OS should generate thumbnails), which might be in conflict with your OS...
Or may be it's your GIMP config which does not put thumbnail when saving...
In all case you should not need an external software to see thumbnails in your folders/directories

I appreciate the reply but... what I was looking for and learned that currently isn't available is... a "thumbnail gallery" when a file is opened in the "Open Image" dialog window/box. It's not available in Gimp 2.10.24, at least not yet.
I put in a request for someone to either build a built-in module in Gimp or make a plugin for Gimp.
So a guy named Rich2005 in another Gimp Forum told me about XnViewMP , and associating the XnViewMP App with Gimp. So I can right click an image in XnViewMP and "Open with..." and choose Gimp in the list. It's a good work around until some one builds a Gimp Module or Gimp Plugin. I run a dual monitor system, so I now run both Gimp and XnViewMP at the same time.

Best Regards

You don't need that gallery if you have all your picture folders set to view as tiles/large icons - then when you browse through them you will see them as thumbnails. Then again I guess that is depending on your OS
