 Post subject: erase background using free select tool?

GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: Basic Level



I have an image from the paintbrush, it has a light color in the background i am trying to delete to transparent. I can erase to transparent, but every time i use the the free select tool, i think thats what its called, it selects everything not just the background color. yes i know its user error, so what do i need to do?

also using the newest gimp version.

Location: SEA - South East Asia
First deselect all what you have selected > Select > None
Then let's start
Go to the channel tab (near layer) > Drag the blue channel and drop it on the canvas
Go back to the Layer tab > Add alpha channel to that new layer
Colors > Threshold
Colors > Color to alpha (white by default)
Alpha to Selection
Go back to the bottom layer > Add mask from selection, deselect the top layer (no need anymore)
done

i dont have that option in my list: Yes you have, but wrong list (although you have it in your list, see screenshot below mine) :mrgreen:

Click on the icon number 1 (add a Mask in layer dock, window dialogue opens)
Then select number 2 (from selection)
