Hello I am new to photo editing terminology.

So I don't understand the problem with above image.

Here it is

When I use a brush/air brush on new layer, the white color does not appear smooth.

But if I used it on the background layer it appears much smooth. (No edges)

Even though document is opened with same setting as shown in left. Does create new layer changes pixels and color bits settings?

Welcome niranjan to Gimp Chat.
Can't see your image so cannot help. Surprised you were even allowed to add one before 5 posts ;) (the image icon is there)
Maybe if you edit your post and attach the image at the bottom of the post box it will attach for you but you will have to give it another name now - (change a single letter/ add a number.)
Anyway, try 'attaching' and maybe someone will beable to help you.

I see you have done something that we do not allow here & I am sure other sites do not allow it also Make sure you have permission to do such first.
Anyway I because I am a moderator I was able to edit your post and saw the url so followed it and saw your image. I cannot see what your opacity is on your layer- if it is low you will hardly see the white.

Opacity is very low and same in both cases.

I did it as an experiment to check if its same.

But results were deifferent.

Try opacity between 10 to 20 with white brush Hardness 025

Keep the brush size larger and spacing 15, hardness 0 and force 4.0.

With these setting you will be able to reproduce same effect.

I can see the issue, easier to see if you do a new-from-visible and 'value-invert'

I am not sure why the transparent layer is different from black layer, but probably the sRGB gamma-correction coming into effect, also the Hardness (25) as name suggests does contain that hardness value. Then the 8 bit gradient ramping (banding) created by the brush is very obvious.

Usual fix for both these issues, especially the ramping, bump the mode up to 16 bit and linear mode.

Edit: Oh...this does go back a long time https://www.gimpusers.com/forums/gimp-d ... re-opacity
:)
